The Children Who Witness Abuse program offers individual and group counselling to children from pre-school age to 18 years and includes a component for mothers, that may include individual counselling, support, parent education or group work.  Children who witness violence at home live with fear and anxiety waiting for the next violent episode to occur.

Individual Counselling For Children and Youth

Short term individual counselling is offered for children who are not ready for a group or for whom there is no appropriate group available.

The individual counselling offers the child an opportunity to:

Share their thoughts and feelings

Learn that the violence is not their fault

Learn healthy ways to express their feelings

Children’s Groups

The children’s counselling group is a 6 – 8 week group in which the children learn:

That they are not alone

New coping and problem solving skills

What abuse is and to identify the causes and effects of abuse

What Are The Goals Of A Children’s Support Group?

To dispel common myths surrounding family violence and marital abuse.

To provide a non-threatening environment to talk about feelings and help teach healthy ways to express anger, hurt, fear, etc

To let children know that they are not alone and help them share their thoughts and feeling with others from similar situations.

To define abuse (physical, emotional, verbal and sexual) and to let the children know their personal rights.

To teach problem solving and coping skills.

To identify the causes and effects of conflict.
