Clansman Pipeband![]() |
|
Powell River has long been a community in which piping and pipe bands have thrived. In 1965 a junior band was formed at Brooks junior Secondary School by Lionel Devine and George Thomson. Devine, from Australia, became the first Pipe Major, and George, was made Pipe Sgt. Drumming was looked after by Frank Brady, the school Band Master. The band, known as the Highland Laddies, became active in school functions, and from 1966 was assisted by the Moose Lodge, a very helpful sponsor in the band’s formative years. With the help of a very active Auxiliary, the band grew and became a very successful asset to the community. In 1966, Greg Regan, another Australian schoolteacher, became Drill Instructor and organized training sessions which included Easter Band Camps. The band was sometimes known as the Highland Laddies Moose Pipe Band. In 1967 the Highland Laddies attended the World’s Fair in Montreal where they were billeted by the Moose Lodge. On occasions, when the youths played alone, the Pipe Major’s role was taken by David Rennie. Parents and spouses of the members (for by now, older persons were joining) worked hard in fundraising and even made uniforms. Ceilidhs were organized, with the ladies providing the popular meat pies associated with these very successful events. Phillip McMillan, from Ayreshire, became Drum Sergeant in 1968 and established the high standard which has been maintained over the years. The Highland Laddies, as Provincial Reps, attended the World Fair in Osaka, Japan in 1969 accompanied by a group of Highland Dancers, the pupils of Mrs. May Cousins, of Powell River. As many of the “Laddies” grew up and left Powell River the name of the band was changed to the Clansman Pipe Band, which for a few years was an independent group until the Powell River Legion (Branch 164) consented to become sponsor. The band has always worn the Prince Charles Edward Stuart tartan. At first it had blue tunics and feather bonnets. With the aid of the B.C. Lotto fund it changed to Prince Charles jackets and balmorals. The band is now playing Shepherd chanters. Devine was Pipe Major until he returned to Australia in 1975 and was succeeded by George Thomson. A product of the Sons of Scotland band in Vancouver, Thomson had played in other Vancouver bands before moving to Powell River. John Macdonald, also from Vancouver, and a former member of the Seaforth Highlanders band, was appointed P-Sgt. Over the years the band has participated in a great variety of activities: Legion Highland Games, Victoria Day parades in Nanaimo, the Powell River Seafair parade, Gibson’s Sea Cavalcade, Texada Daze and Texada Legion’s Burns Dinners, Barker Days in Quesnel (1987), Expo 87, Cumberland Centennial ’88, Lund Centenial (1989), Klondike Days in Edmonton (1986), Courtenay July 1st Celebrations, to name some. Competing in the Legion Highland Gathering, the band has come first in its class three times and won the Drumming Trophy four times. These years were very successful with the leadership of Pipe Major George Thomson and lead tip Greg Thomson. Jim Wright was also very instrumental in the bands performance. He is now Pipe Major of the Shuswap Pipe Band. Since 1987 John Macdonald has been Pipe Major and Bill Forest Pipe-Sgt. Greg Thomson was lead drummer from 1983 to 1987, when he was succeeded by David Markland, one of his pupils. Although the band continues to train young pipers and drummers, the continuity of the band depends upon the oldtimers who make their permanent home in Powell River. Pipe Majors Lionel Devine 1965-1975 George Thomson 1975-1987 John Macdonald 1987- Leading Side Drummers Phillip McMillan 1968-1983 Greg Thomson 1983-1987 David Markland 1987-1989 Phillip McMillan 1989- Drum Majors: (occasionally, in early years only) Greg Regan Jack Russell 2005 is the bands 40th anniversary. We all have different influences which make our band quite unique, our lead guitarist is influenced by such artists as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. Our bass player is influenced by such artists as KISS, Motley Crue. Our drummer is influenced by such artists as Frank Zappa, and Tiger Bill and my influences are Dwight Yoakum and Johny Cash. So as you can see we have very different tastes in music which makes for a very interesting sound of music............oh and of course we all have been influenced by our parents which of course are also all musicians. We also all originate from Ontario. We toured Northern Ontario for about 5 years. Our original band name was "LOOSE CHANGE" but after moving up here found out another band was using that name so we changed ours. Our biggest accomplishment was having opened up for "APRIL WINE" at the 2nd Annual Lumberjack Festival in Kapuskasing, Ontario. The biggest crowd we've ever played for .........some 2800 people packed the arena that night....which made it a night to remember. We all started playing instruments as kids, around the ages of 7-9 years old. We've been playing together for the past 8 years. We do our own set-up, sound, and lights and we also manage ourselves; have been doing this since we started playing gigs. We are:

JAR |
| Columbia Signs Local Musician The following is republished with the express permission of Peak Publishing Ltd. Four years ago Rob Wade started the heavy metal band, JAR. Three months ago, the band signed with Columbia Records. "It's a vision I've had since I was really young," said Wade. "I wanted to do what everyone I admired was doing. So I went headstrong with it and I haven't given up since." The makings of JAR. started in Westview, when Wade: the drummer: was much younger. "I was bashing on buckets in high chairs when I was a little kid." He joined the school band when he was old enough and, in high school, he started some bands of his own. "I did pretty much everything normal kids did, and then the same things as other teenagers were doing...but I'd always go home, lock myself in my room and practice." After high school, he went to Capilano College and took two years at "jazz school." He played with a number of bands, but it took him quite a while to find the right match. "I knew what I wanted to do, and I finally found the right people. We all clicked...it's hard to find people who will give up their lives to hop in a van with three other guys [and go touring around the country." Over the past two years, Wade estimated that the band has toured Canada 10 times. "All that hard work paid off. We've built a good following across Canada. The radio stations have picked us up." It was at New Music West, a yearly music conference held in Vancouver, where JAR. was first approached by a label. For the next while, they travelled back and forth from Vancouver to Los Angeles and New York, showcasing. Finally, Columbia offered them a deal. He said one big difference is the stress level: JAR. now has a producer, and the members don't have to worry about money all the time. "Music is my job now: my hobby and my occupation all in one." The reason the group got their big break, Wade said, is because they give 110 per cent all the time: regardless of whether there are five people in the audience or 500. "We played in LA for 10 people, and we gave it everything." |

Not So Bulletproof

The Powell River four-piece had a busy July, lighting up Powell River stages with their brand of high-energy indie rock, spending hours in the studio cutting an 11-track demo and writing new material. But the clock is ticking for the young ensemble, all of them recent Brooks Secondary School grads, as two members gear up to leave Powell River in pursuit of higher education in Victoria. "I think we'll be pleasantly surprised at how quickly the year goes by," said guitarist Lukah Bouchard when asked about the future of the band. He's eager to continue the songwriting process during semester breaks and any time John and MacDonald can find between classes. Bouchard and drummer Lyell Woloschuk will stay in Powell River until at least January, at which point some serious decisions regarding the longevity of NSB will be made. A move to Victoria may be in the cards, if some contacts are made in the city, said John. Even the idea of planning ahead is a fresh one for the band, said MacDonald. Having played together on and off since October--the teachers' strike fueled hours of practice--the band officially formed in May, coming together to fill a suddenly vacant spot at When Bands Collide, a local gathering of bands from around the province. "We hadn't spoken in months before that," said Woloschuk, laughing. Then came an historic show on Canada Day at the Lund Gazebo. "Opening for Nomeansno really kind of started it all," said Bouchard. NSB pumped the crowd with crunchy guitars and commands to "get up here and dance," before making way for Zu, an Italian hard-core modern jazz quartet. Victoria's Nomeansno closed out the night with their jarring punk hybrid rhythms. "It opened us up to a new crowd," said Woloschuk. Since leaving the high-school scene, the band has returned to play at the Lund Gazebo, entertained at block parties and most recently graced the stage at Sea Fair. Enjoying the spark of success, NSB is wrapping up their demo at a Cranberry Lake studio, promising to post select tracks from the studio sessions on their website in weeks to come. Readers seeking more information can visit www.myspace.com/notsobulletproof or contact NSB at notsobulletproof@hotmail.com. |

Old Age and Treachery |
![]() |
|
Ringing harmonies, seasoned musicianship, well-crafted songwriting, and a a smooth sytle blending blues, jazz, folk, pop, and country. A professional show filled with casual warmth and relaxed humor. Old Age and Treachery is a labor of love for two of Powell River's finest musicians, Ron Campbell and Roy Carson. Guitarist/singer Ron Campbell is no stranger to the Powell River music scene, having entertained professionally for more than 40 years. He has released three critically acclaimed CDs, has toured throughout BC, and has worked with a who's who of top musicians. A BC Festival of the Arts Songwriting Delegate, his songs are noted for their clever wordplay and strong melodies (he sites The Beatles as his prime influences). Ron is also well known for his bluesy slide guitar style. Roy Carson, bass and vocals, holds a B.Mus. from the University of Victoria. A gifted educator, he is on the faculty of the Powell River Academy of music and of the Yukon Summer Music Camp. His performance experience ranges from rock bands to classical ensembles. Beside being a founding member of Old Age and Treachery, Roy is also a lead singer for vocal jazz quartet, The Mix. Old Age and Treachery recently debuted at the Jazz on the Rocks festival on Texada Island. The gig was a resounding success, with audience and festival orgainzers responding enthusiastically to the show. Ron and Roy are hoping for more performance opportunities in the near future. Plans are also underway to record the newest Old Age and Treachery tunes. For more info, call Ron Campbell (604) 487-4492, email ronc@ronc.net or visit www.ronc.net . |

Our Kind of Music![]() |
|
The name Our Kind of Music is both the title of our band and a catchword for the several kinds of music we play. It was born in July 2004 when several of us horn players accepted two gigs and found all our potential rhythm players would be out of town! So we got innovative with a computer program called Band-in-a-box” and played the gigs with computer-generated rhythm. The core horn-playing musicians include Dave Florence & Bill Campbell on reeds and Travis McDonough on Trumpet. When we do add live rhythm, it’s Carl Fairclough on keyboard and Ken Price on drums. We horn players kind of like the guitar, vibes and string sounds from the computer, but it’s great to have the interaction of a live rhythm section on other occasions. Our first gig was a private birthday party at the Golf Club in August; the second was some Mardi Gras music at the Blackberry Fest wine and cheese, Aug 25; then came gigs at the Legion on September 3, Oct 1 and Nov 5. With our electronic rhythm support, Bill and Dave also played at the Blubber Bay Art Gallery after Sandcastle, Travis and Bill entertained on the ferry for Jazz on the Rocks, and Bill plays regularly at the Texada Legion on Friday evenings. We are available for hire at reasonable rates. Our objective is to donate our time, and charge just enough to cover our expenses. |

Guitarist and Vocalist Craig Nokes, a long-time poet, began writing songs about his experiences and interactions with people living in the street while busking on the streets of Calgary. His powerful and striking vocals project over energetic and dynamic guitar melodies. Drummer Corey Matsumoto (formerly of funk-groove band Upshot) locks down the rhythm while at the same time floating around the beat, creating an uplifting and dance-able groove. Bhima joined the group for a short while during the summer of 2003, but his globe-trotting ways keep him from becoming a full-time member of the band. His extraordinary didgeridoo and bodhrán (celtic drum) skills add both depth and dynamics to the music. |

Powell River Community Concert Band |
|
Music includes light classics, show tunes, marches and popular medleys. Instruments include clarinets, flutes, oboe, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, basses and percussion. We have about 25 members ranging in age from high school to retirement. More members are always needed. We expect people to have played an instrument to the high school band level. Our director is Walter Martella, a staff member of the Academy of Music. Walter teaches private lessons (piano, trumpet, accordian, jazz theory, choir), leads several choirs and ensembles, and teaches on the Malaspina University College Music degree program. We mainly play music published for school stage bands, focussing on 40's and 50's big band swing arrangements. Instruments include up to 5 saxophones, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, piano, bass, guitar, and drum kit. We need trombones and one trumpet now. Our director is Walter Martella, same as for the Concert Band. We play mainly for fun, but also perform several concerts per year and occasionally for dances in conjunction with JAZZ Unlimited. |

Powell River Pipe Band |
|
The Powell River Pipe Band was formed in 1930. In 1937 the band went to Vancouver to play for the visit of King George and Queen Elizabeth and it was at this time that the Powell River Company decided to sponsor the band, with the members being assured of job security. The Band became 'Good Will Ambassadors' and toured North America on behalf of the Powell River Company. Many trophies and honours were won while wearing the McGregor tartan in honour of Lt Col John MacGregor, VC. After MacMillian Bloedel became the owners in 1962 the Hunting MacMillian tartan worn by the drummers reflected H.R. MacMillian. The band did not compete after 1970 and it became dormant in 1980's. |

Eventually members were approached to entertain together at community events, and a name was needed. Thus Recycled Sound was created. They operate an open stage for any performers who wish to bring their instruments or lend a voice to contribute to the entertainment. Further, the band participates in several community celebrations and private parties. The members of Recycled Sound include:

Cindy Koppen, Gino Cosentino, Taylor Lussier and Skye Morrison, |

A group of local musicians has produced a recording of original songs. Hold the Moon is a collection of songs with slightly jazzy rhythms featuring strong harmonies blending the group's male and female voices. Cindy Koppen is the CD's songwriter. Koppen says music is in her blood, and her family includes a great-great-aunt who sang with the Metropolitan Opera. Koppen's mother was a professional concert soloist, her father played instruments including the bagpipes, and her brothers are musical as well. "Our young lives were surrounded by music. We lived it at home, church and school," Koppen says. Koppen's brother, Dan Warren, is a professional trumpet player with the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, where he is also conductor in residence. Koppen learned the ukulele first, then guitar. When her two children were young, she started to write music. After they had grown, Koppen started writing again. "I wanted to write music that touched people where they felt understood. Writing has been a great means of expression for me over the last few years." Gino Cosentino, Taylor Lussier and Skye Morrison, Koppen's daughter are the other three members of the Sojourners. "I am as passionate about music as I am about my art," says Morrison, who is also a visual artist. "In fact they are tightly woven together." Morrison credits travelling aboard as a motivator. "Taking my guitar along has opened many doors. I have also met some excellent world musicians who have inspired and encouraged me." Morrison has plans to record a CD of her own original music. Lussier also has a visual arts background. "Drawing and sketching had always been my most comfortable and successful form of creative output, but once I discovered singing and songwriting, the sketch pads and pencils took a backseat to the stages and microphones," he says. Collaborating on Hold the Moon was something new for him. "The style wasn't my usual, so it was nice to show some versatility. With so many stories to tell and so many ways to tell them, music is a fantastic way to make each story its own." As well as being part of the group, Cosentino served as arranger and producer on Hold the Moon. "Arranging Cindy's songs is very easy," he says. "Cindy was always receptive to new ideas to her songs. It became a partnership and friendship wrapped up in one." Originally from Montreal, Cosentino's first teacher was his father. He has been a working musician for over 20 years and now specializes in arranging, producing and teaching through his company Chartmakers Music Productions. Currently the music director at Westview Baptist Church, Cosentino also teaches piano and drums and arranges for local songwriters. Hold the Moon also features Doug Biggs on guitar and Michelle Kier on vocals, along with Cory Matsumoto on drums. Dan Erickson also plays some lead guitar on the CD. The recording was done by Biggs at his home. Hold the Moon is available at Local Loco's Café at 4692 Willingdon Avenue. Tangled Web got it's start with Shane, Derek and Glen getting together in Derek's mobile home and jamming. We were crowded into a small bedroom. It wasn't long before we thought we needed more room so we converted a shed in his backyard to a band room. Many a night was spent out there learning tons of tunes, with many a party to keep things lubricated. We played a few gigs but still needed to bring the band up another level. That's when Marion came into the picture. We worked hard and landed a gig at the Westview. We had played there a few times previous, with good reviews, but when we opened with Marion it was the start of many great times. We did many gigs over 8 years or more. One of the most memorable was to be the opening band for a Grapes of Wrath concert at the Recreation Complex. We played in most rooms in Powell River; Marine Hotel, Lund, Sliammon Hall, Italian Hall, Beach Gardens Resort, Moose Lodge, Texada Arms, Texada Legion, and Westview Hotel where we were the house band for quite a while. We also did a few weddings, fundraisers, Seafairs, and outdoor parties. Another gig of note was being the back-up band for Nestor Pistor in Port Hardy. Shane, Derek, and Glen practiced his tunes over a few nights and accompanied him in his comedy/music routine. |
