At nine a.m. May 6, thirteen workers and watchers cruised up
Powell Lake about three kilometers from the Shingle mill to the trailhead on
Weyerhaeuser's "Teak" and sister boat. |
| After a two km hike up an old skid road, we reached the
steam donkey on the ridge. Howie McKamey from Goat Lake Forest Products had
hiked in at seven, and guided in the Goat Lake Forest Product helicopter
that slung in our tools for the day. Greg Voysey and Howie cleared
trees so we could get our first full view of the donkey. |

By 2 p.m. we were ready for the first lift; the crew had
disconnected the stack from the boiler, cut bolts holding the boiler from
the frame, taken the water tank from the sled; and assembled pipes, the
small fairlead and other small parts for the lift. |
| Present at the work party: Museum
members: Brian Crilly, Chet Fee, Tom Sparks, Jack McCuish, Bill McKay,
Dave Florence, Jim Southern, Les Shelton, Mike Clark, Rudi van Zwaaij.
Steam donkey committee: Greg Voysey, Howie McKamey, Bill Tuba.
Others: Paul Kutz, Kevin Giles |

Oceanview Helicopters arrived at two p.m. with the Bell
Long-Ranger dragging the longline and dropped off several nylon rope slings.
Howie McKamey assembled the lift packages and guided the pilot on the vhf
radio. The crew stood well back to avoid the prop wash. |

| Up, up and away. Next stop, Shaker Bay.
Stack, Water Tank and pipes. |
   |
| We collected the items from Shaker Bay (edge of
Mouat Bay, across from the Shingle mill), and trucked them for restoration.

Next we waited until May 23 to lift the main pieces using a large Chinook
donated by Helifor Industries Ltd. Unfortunately only the boiler could be
lifted that day because the other piece was too heavy. We await
another day when the Chinook is in this area and available. Photos of the
Chinook are taken from the Shingle mill. Rudi Van Zwaaij with the boiler at
Shaker Bay. |
